My Harvest: Susan’s Story

The Empress is in the House.

Each woman’s story is a source of inspiration! This is the story of how I began to see every woman as an Empress, a woman worthy of her own throne.

I’ve been a birth doula for over 20 years. The birth of my son opened my eyes to the challenges of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum life for all families. This realization inspired me to support women through the transition into motherhood. I started by attending births for free, offering much-needed support.

Recognizing the importance of this work, I decided to dedicate my time and energy to it, building something meaningful for others. I enrolled in a course with DONA (Doulas of North America) at a local hospital, and upon certification, I was invited to work there. This marked the beginning of my journey with the local hospital, homebirth midwives, and DCF.

A recurring observation stood out to me: even in the midst of labor, women often continued caregiving, ensuring everyone else was okay. I’ve seen laboring mothers, amidst intense contractions, ask: Is everyone ELSE alright?

• Does the midwife have enough tea?
• How about the doula?
• Is her partner doing okay?

As a birth doula, I’ve witnessed this moment time and again— women in the heat of labor still caring for those around them.
So, I started calling my birthing mothers “Empress.” I consciously reminded them of their own needs, redirecting their focus to their experience and the task at hand. I called them into their royalty, their sovereignty, their significance in the cycle of life.

It made all the difference!

Looking over my life, I realized that an Empress on her throne has a radically different perspective and experience. As the Empress, seated on my throne, I access an ancient power that brings internal centering. From this center flows the clarity of a life fully lived in the heart of purpose. Here, I create my life from deep knowledge and the richness harvested from my life’s soil.

It’s this purposeful clarity I want to share with you, Empress to Empress, one nourishing cup of earthy soul medicine and deep understanding at a time!
