Cedarwood, Texas (juniperus ashei)

This is a powerful essential oil with a beautiful woody, rich aroma. Valued for antiseptic and astringent properties, Texas Cedarwood aids in reducing acne, eczema and other skin conditions; do a test patch…it may be best, for this purpose, to put several drops in a teaspoon of Jojoba (in this Promotion) and then apply. Excellent for the Central Nervous System and reducing minor aches and pains, inflammation. Also has powerful anti-fungal action. Applied over the adrenals, Texas Cedarwood provides energy and support when you are overwhelmed.

Traditionally, Texas Cedarwood has been used to repel moths, fleas, and other pests due to its natural insecticidal properties. Several drops on the sole of each foot will serve this purpose, and also provide a centering/grounding energy when applied there, as well.

I have found this essence to be a powerful aid in working with anger issues. It can help you face these issues with a softer perspective with less judgment.

Historically, these trees have been revered in purification rituals, offerings, and ceremonies to invoke higher-level guidance. In addition to the healing properties mentioned above, these trees, and the oil derived from them, have long symbolized strength, endurance and spiritual protection.

Citronella, Mana Grass (Cymbopogon winterianus)

Most famous for being a highly effective, natural, non-toxic insect repellent, Citronella is also highly antifungal and antibacterial, and can be used to tone the skin, combat excessive oil, and manage conditions like acne. Do a test patch if using on your skin, as you may need to add several drops to a teaspoon of an oil like Jojoba or Rosa rubiginosa (Rose Hip) before applying to skin that is damaged.

Citronella can be an excellent choice for diffusing, helping to clear respiratory congestion, creating an uplifting mood, and clearing the mind of overthinking or worry. Great for a midday energy boost, due to the oil’s invigorating effect on the physical and emotional bodies.

In some cultures, Citronella was used for protection, creating a barrier against unwanted influences, both energetically and emotionally. Citronella can also be used to purify a space, clearing it of any negativity or lingering emotional distress.

Eucalyptus Lemon (Wild) (Eucalyptus citriodora)

The fresh, citrusy aroma and unique chemical composition of this oil make it distinct from other eucalyptus oils. Known for its ability to clear the airways, Lemon Eucalyptus relieves sinus congestion, allergies and respiratory discomfort when inhaled (diffused), applied behind the ears, or delivered in a steam inhalation (please reach out to me directly, if you are not familiar with this technique).

Importantly, this EO has potent anti-microbial properties, which can help fight fungal infections, and bacteria, and even prevent mold growth in the home. Like other essences in this Promotion, Lemon Eucalyptus is powerful at repelling mosquitoes and other pests and is commonly used in natural sprays for humans and animals.

One of the most universally effective insect repellents.

Culturally, indigenous people of Australia have associated this oil with resilience, strength and adaptability in the face of challenges. And finally, I must mention this oil’s ability to sharpen concentration, alleviate mental “fog”, and promote clear thinking. Another good one for the home diffuser, when working on a tedious project or one which requires analytical thinking.

Lavender Bulgaria (Lavandula angustifolia)

Bulgarian Lavenders are renowned for their superior quality, and this one is no exception. All lavenders are renowned, as well, for their incredibly wide range of medicinal, emotional and spiritual benefits. They are literally an apothecary in a bottle!

This beautiful offering is excellent as a sleep aid, and for bestowing a sense of deep relaxation. Its calming chemical compounds, linalool and linalyl acetate, work their magic on the body’s Central Nervous System (CNS) to bring tranquility to a nervous or unsettled mental or emotional state. This includes reducing anxiety in pets. Lavender is also known for pain relief, including headaches, menstrual cramps, and muscle/joint aches.

In terms of her ability to promote healthy skin, Bulgarian Lavender is phenomenal when it comes to soothing and healing burns…whether it be from the sun or any other type of burn. A great method involves using cool or cold water to reduce the literal temperature of the burned area, and then applying enough drops of the Lavender to fully cover the area in question. Do that every few hours, and you will experience lasting relief and healing. This EO is also great at soothing and healing bug bites.

Lavender has long been associated with purification, balance and harmony, and that calm allows one to achieve greater spiritual clarity through meditation or prayer practices. A beautiful place to apply the essence for that purpose is the Crown Chakra, if one is invoking a higher power, or over the Heart Chakra, if one is seeking to access the wisdom of the heart.

Ancient civilizations, like the Greeks and Romans, used lavender for its antiseptic and calming properties. It was a staple in the Roman baths, and a remedy for wounds during wartime. Lavender was also used in medieval Europe, where it was tucked into linens and clothing to repel moths and other pests. Finally, lavender was used in the ancient Egyptian mummification processes, and as an ingredient in perfumes and healing balms. Its name derives from the Latin “lavare”, meaning “to wash”. Even today, a huge component of its economic power is its use in detergents, helping not only to clean, but to reduce the unpleasant aroma of some of the chemicals utilized in the production of commercial cleaning agents.

Palmarosa (Cymbopgon martini var. motia)

Palmarosa Oil is a sweet and citrusy elixir that can transform your skincare routine! As a grass, it is naturally purifying, so it is highly effective from an antimicrobial and antifungal standpoint. It also helps rejuvenate the skin by promoting skin regeneration and providing hydration. Its astringent qualities contribute to tightening and toning the skin.

Palmarosa supports circulation and detoxification, thereby translating into increased vitality and improved skin tone. It also supports digestion, and can ease digestive distress. When applied topically or diffused into a space, Palmarosa creates mental clarity and stability, also characteristics of essential oils made from grass, which by its nature offers a grounding energy, though softer than that offered by conifers and other deeply rooted trees.

Palmarosa acts as an effective insect repellent, and with its skin healing properties, can be used for allergic skin reactions to plants like poison ivy and poison sumac.

I also love to layer Palmarosa with other anti-inflammatory essences like Cornmint, Mountain Savory, Black Spruce and Frankincense for joint discomfort or pain.

Melissa (Melissa officinalis)

Melissa has demonstrated promising anti-viral activity in research…confirming centuries of herbal wisdom with regard to her profound healing capabilities. This medicinal plant, and the oil that is derived from it, literally represents a bridge between ancient natural medical practices and contemporary approaches to wellness.

Melissa is a powerful ally in managing the discomfort, physical and emotional, that many women experience during menopause. Teamed with Clary Sage and Geranium, many have experienced reduction, first, and then soon thereafter, elimination of hot flashes. This powerful trio can also help bring emotional harmony.

Anti-inflammatory properties make Melissa a natural for inclusion in your facial regimen. Melissa is also a natural sedative…easing anxiety, reducing stress and promoting restful sleep (which also supports healthy skin). A little goes a long way with Melissa…which is especially good because of her expense.

Why is Melissa so expensive? Primarily, it has to do with the extremely low yield that comes from the distillation of the plant. We cover this in our Level 1 Medicinal Aromatherapy class, where we discuss differences in yield…Melissa brings up the rear in that discussion, barely making an identifiable column in the graph, when compared to oils like lavender and clary sage.

Also, the optimal time to extract the highest quality and highest yield of the oil is a very small window of time, compared to other plants, which can span weeks or even months. This adds to cost as well. The final component of price has to do with adulteration and/or dilution…because of its expense, Melissa EO is often adulterated or cut with carrier oil. While this may reduce the price, it also greatly reduces its medicinal effectiveness, so many people have never truly experienced the incredible healing power of this precious oil.

Please note: Nut and Seed oils do not have as long a shelf-life as essential oils, so please store away from extreme heat or cold.

Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)

Jojoba is non-allergenic, does not clog pores, and is also a non-irritant, so it can be used around the eyes. It contains Vitamin E, known for promoting healthy and clear skin, and is an antioxidant, offering anti-aging benefits as well as protection from the damaging effects of free radicals, which are believed to contribute to various chronic diseases. It is excellent for massaging into the scalp, reducing dandruff and nurturing hair by restoring balance to dry or irritated conditions.

Jojoba is antibacterial and antifungal, and can be helpful in healing sores and wounds. Its anti-inflammatory properties help calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote healing for minor cuts and scarring. Jojoba oil’s molecular structure mirrors human sebum, making it excellent for balancing oil production.

Energetically, Jojoba is about endurance and persistence. It helps clear the mind of clutter and messaging “loops”, allowing one to establish a sensory connection to the body, facilitating a deeper state of meditation or spiritual presence. Jojoba can also be used as a “carrier oil”…this is not to denigrate or ignore its own healing properties, but, because of its non-intrusive aroma, it can be used with other oils, where it literally heightens their effects on our body or emotions. Think of it as bringing the other oil or oils to the place of need, and contributing to their effectiveness instead of a neutral, non-involved “carrier”.

Jojoba is native to the arid regions of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Indigenous peoples long valued it for its protective and healing properties, using it to nourish their skin and hair in harsh desert climates. It was viewed as a miraculous provision of nature in an environment where water and moisture are scarce.

My absolute favorite oil for massage!

It is the water from the “cook”/distillation of the essential oil. Some trace amounts of essential oil remain in the water.

Cistus Rock Rose Hydrolat (Cistus Iandaniferus)

The hydrolat is produced via the steam distillation of Cistus essential oil from the leaves and twigs of the Cistus shrub. The hydrolat is a more subtle, yet very powerful, medicine from this amazing shrub. It is prized as a gentle toner; its natural polyphenols and flavonoids help soothe irritated or inflamed skin, reduce redness and promote healing — ideal for sensitive, reactive or aging skin. You can even use it on babies for diaper rash. Regular use supports a refreshed, revitalized complexion.

Use the hydrolat in a cold compress for swelling, soothing or post-procedure healing. It can also be used on cuts and scrapes to disinfect/cleanse the wound and reduce scarring. I would also like to note something that is also subtle, but important…the value of self-care to one’s mood, self-esteem and the creation of a mindful ritual that gives us that momentary pause that can help ground and balance us. Cynthia Olivera, our Education Director, talks about the importance of taking a “pleasure pause”…spritzing one’s face and body with Cistus Hydrolat is really the perfect example of doing that for oneself.

Historically, Cistus was thought to ward off negativity, invoke divine protection and call forth new beginnings. Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations used cistus-derived waters and resins in their healing baths, perfumes and sacred ceremonies. The shrub’s ability to thrive in harsh, rocky, sun-baked conditions made it a symbol of endurance and rebirth. Spray her in your sacred space or personal sanctuary when meditating to enhance your intuition and your connection to the Divine.
